A hair system looks its best the day it leaves our chair. What you do at home between visits helps decide how good it looks and how long it lasts. This is general guidance. How you care for your unit depends on the base material and how it is attached (tape, glue or clips), so your barber’s instructions for your unit always come first.
Washing
Most people wash a hair system about once every one to two weeks, and sooner if they sweat a lot or work out often. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and lukewarm water. Lather in the direction of the hair, with no scrubbing or circular rubbing, and rinse the same way. Washing too rarely lets product and residue build up. Washing too often can dry the hair out.
Conditioning
Condition the mid-lengths and ends, where the hair dries out first. Keep conditioner and heavy masks away from the base and the bond area, since buildup there can interfere with how the unit stays attached.
Brushing and styling
Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft detangling brush. Start at the ends and work up in small sections, and hold the hair near the base with your free hand so you are not pulling on the unit. Be extra gentle when the hair is wet. If you use heat, keep it low and keep the dryer moving.
Products
Choose light, sulfate-free products and use them sparingly. If your unit is attached with adhesive, keep oils, heavy creams and alcohol-based sprays away from the bond area, because they can weaken it. Ask your barber which products suit your base and attachment method.
Sleeping
A satin or silk pillowcase reduces friction while you sleep, which helps limit tangling. If your hair tangles easily, a loose satin bonnet or scarf can also help.
Sweat, sun and swimming
Rinse the hair after heavy sweating. Chlorine and salt water can be hard on hair and on some attachment methods, so ask your barber before swimming and rinse with fresh water afterward. Strong sun can fade hair color over time, so a hat helps on long days outside.
Keep your maintenance appointments
Home care only goes so far. Regular maintenance visits let your barber check the bond, clean and refresh the unit, and keep it blended with your natural hair as it grows. How often depends on your unit and how it is attached, and your barber will tell you what schedule fits you.
